Dopium 2018

Blurring the line between performance and audience into one shared experience. A system of sheer scrims hung parallel to one another hung from fishing lines and dyed with indigo creates the boundaries of the veil. Negative spaces are created by removing sections of the cloth to create walking paths and an ephemeral performance space. Like unfolding the layers of one’s consciousness, only the observer can choose one’s path. Throughout the evening various musicians, dancers and poets are invited into the negative space. The performances are improvised and collaborative, woven together by a composition of scents rooted in each artist’s unique history.

Kora performance with Little Seeds

Kora performance with Little Seeds

the aftermath

After the first performance, the fire marshal cut down 19 of the 21 layers down. The full installation was only experienced for the first hour of the exhibition. Lines of people gathered to enter from the two sides. Music, scent and curiosity beckoned the impromptu and transient audience to mingle with the performers. When the veils came down, the line between performer and audience once again makes it’s presence.
